three great family activities in garden city, ny
Cradle of Aviation Museum: ¼ miles
This museum is located on land once part of Mitchel Air Force Base which, together with nearby Roosevelt Field (now a mall) and other airfields on the Hempstead Plains, was the site of many historic and world-changing flights. In fact, so many seminal flights occurred in the area that by the mid-1920s, the cluster of airfields was already dubbed the "Cradle of Aviation". Today, the museum is dedicated to curating the area’s aerospace heritage using science and technology.
Long Island Children's Museum: 1 mile
The Long Island Children’s Museum is another one of Long Island’s successful airplane hangar redevelopment projects. The former hangar now houses this award-winning museum that offers an innovative and exciting day of activities for children and adults. The Museum features multiple indoor and outdoor exhibits as well as a modern lecture and performance theater. The Long Island Children’s Museum regularly schedules professional music, dance, and theater performances and provides a nurturing environment for families to play and learn.
Nassau Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum: 2 miles
Nassau Coliseum has accommodated virtually all forms of entertainment and sports, from state-of-the-art rock concerts, touring family shows, professional wrestling, boxing, track & field, lacrosse and soccer. The arena sits at the corner Nassau Community College and Hofstra University near sporting venues, parks, and much more.
*The Nassau Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum is currently closed and under new development and management. The arena will re-open in the winter of 2016 as a world-class sports and entertainment complex with surrounding lifestyle and retail development.
